About the SVCC

The Stour Valley Canoe Club was formed in September 1993. It meets most Saturday mornings, between 9:00am and 12:00am at it club house in th grounds of the Blandford School. The members of the club range from 10 years to well, mature ages. From absolute beginners to accomplisted white water canoeists, they all have one thing in common, they are crazy about canoeing.

Our usual venue is the River Stour at Blandford and we also have agreements with landowners that gives us access to various parts of the river between Sturminster Newton and Wimborne. The Club is affiliated to the British Canoe Union (BCU) and BCU qualified instructors teaching 1 star to 3 star skills emphasis on safety. This forms the basis of our weekly meetings, the rest of the time being devoted to having fun.

Our members din't just stay in Dorset though, in a short time you could be competent enough to join them in a trip down a white water river like the Exe and Barle in Devon or spend a day on the rapids at Symonds Yat in Hereford. Some of our expeditions have taken us to a number of different rivers in Devon, Wales and a number of white water courses. Some of these trips includes a overnight camp. We also enjoy trips to the seaside to take advantage of the local surf and coastline. We also have regular monthly trips to Bryanston School swimming pool where we learn to brush up our rolling and rescue skills.

To try canoeing with Stour Valley Canoe Club cost nothing. Your first Saturday morning session is free, all you need is a change of clothes (just in case) and maybe a hot drink. If you like it then it cost £17.50 per year to join the club and £3.00 (£2.00 for the unwaged) per session. To hire a kayak is £2.00, paddle and buoyancy aid is £1.00.
